Celebrating silver jubilee

2022 is a year of great significance to Aravind-Coimbatore as the hospital crosses another milestone in its journey - completing 25 years of service. The hospital was opened in January 1997 in response to the increasing demand for eye care from patients in the north western portion of the state of Tamil Nadu. The hospital at present has a bed capacity of 569 which include 400 beds for the camp and free direct walk-in patients. Today, the hospital handles about 540,000 out-patient visits and 90,000 surgeries a year. It also offers residency programmes and fellowships.

Mega camp at Thirukailayaypuram

In association with Vetrivel Murugan Temple in Thirukailayapuram, Aravind has been conducting comprehensive eye screening camps in Thirukailayapuram since 1994. These camps have always been highly successful and productive; over the past two decades, 29,662 patients were screened and over 18,150 patients underwent surgery. In the mega camp held on March 19, a total of 1,254 patients were screened and 960 underwent surgery.

CME on Best practices in patient care

Aravind-Coimbatore conducted the CME for its entire staff involved in patient care delivery. The CME consisted of three sessions which were moderated by Dr. Jebinth Brayan. Various aspects of patient care delivery such as ensuring quality, importance of effective, professional ethics and continuous improvement were discussed in detail.

Refraction skill workshop

Refraction department of Aravind-Coimbatore organised the workshop for its employees and trainees to teach them the skills needed for performing refraction. Participants were divided into 11 teams and each team was given a skill-related topic. With the help of seniors, trainees from each group came up with presentations on various skills. Charts and models representing vision cubicles were prepared and instruments and techniques used in refraction were displayed.

CME on Medico-legal cases

The CME conducted for the MLOPs of Aravind-Coimbatore aimed to orient the audience on the procedures to handle medico legal cases and legal formalities involved. The session helped the participants understand the importance of clear documentation in medico legal cases as well as proper communication with patients or their family members while handling such cases.

CME on Situational analysis

The CME aimed to orient the participants on the importance of giving individual attention to patients; confirming patient identity at every stage of care, importance of listening and proper communication skills.  Trainees from the departments – Medical Records, Refraction, Outpatient, Lab, Counselling, In Patient, Operation Theatre and Opticals – depicted challenging situations they face at work in the form of role plays. The analysis that followed the presentation helped everyone understand that having soft skills are equally important as the content knowledge to perform well at work.

Importance of Professional Skills for Counsellors

Around 50 counsellors from Aravind - Coimbatore, Tirupur, Udumalpet and Salem participated in this session. The workshop focused on the importance of listening, communication skills, being empathetic and how imbibing these soft skills could facilitate a change in the counselling approach and outcome. Participants found the session extremely engaging as well as informational.

Online CMEs on CSSD protocols

Aravind-Coimbatore organised three online CMEs (September 25, November 12 and December 15) to reiterate the importance of following good practices to ensure patient safety and reduce hospital surgical infection by strictly following Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD) protocols and policies. Essential topics in CSSD like zoning, cleaning and disinfection, sterilization techniques, validations were discussed. This was also an opportunity to share the best practices and standardize these across the system.
